Project Overview

Ejido Kilometer 120 lies within the expansive forest area of the Mexican tropics, near the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, a critical component of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Historically, this region has faced significant pressures from logging, agricultural expansion, and road construction, which have contributed to forest fragmentation and degradation. The local population, living under conditions of economic marginalization, has relied heavily on unsustainable practices to meet their needs. This project has been developed with the goal of reversing forest loss while fostering sustainable development for the community.

Solution Description

The project aims to restore and manage degraded forest areas using revenue generated from carbon credits. Key activities include reforesting with native vegetation, silvicultural treatments, and weed control to enhance forest health. Monitoring systems, such as camera traps and permanent observation sites, aim to prevent illegal logging and fires while enabling better understanding of biodiversity. Community members are trained to combat forest fires and other threats, while initiatives for sustainable resource use—such as latex harvesting for natural chewing gum, eco-tourism, and crafting—seek to create economic opportunities aligned with conservation goals.

Impact

By implementing these activities, the project aims to restore approximately 7,853 hectares of forest, contributing to carbon sequestration and enhanced biodiversity protection. The initiative is designed to provide sustainable income opportunities for the local community, reducing reliance on unsustainable practices and fostering long-term resilience. Over time, these efforts aim to rejuvenate the forest ecosystem, providing a habitat for protected species and supporting the livelihoods of those who depend on this critical natural resource.
